Computational Electromagnetics (CEM)

2nd (summer) semester module

Module 1. Computational Electromagnetics 1

Semester: Summer (2nd)
Qualification goals: Acquistion of an insight into various techniques to numerically simulate electromagnetic and coupled multiphysics field problems in highly complex technical systems or biological organisms.
Assessment Measures: The type of the final module exam will be announced at the beginning of the lecture. One of two options is possible:
• written module examination (120 minutes), unrestrictedly repeatable;
• oral module examination (30 minutes), unrestrictedly repeatable.

Contents: Discrete electromagnetic field theory: Continuous geometric discretization methods for Maxwell’s equations (Finite Difference-method, Finite Integration Technique, Cell Method, Whitney Finite Element Method), discrete field formulations, implementations (commercial/research) and practical applications for electromagnetic/multiphysical field problems in complex systems/biological organisms.

3rd (winter) semester module

Module 2. Computational Electromagnetics 2

Workload: 240 hours
Duration of Module: 1 semester
Semester: Winter (3rd)
Qualification goals: Ability to effectively use modern (preferably industrial standard) commercial CEM simulation tools or to alternatively develop and use own implementations of electromagnetic field simulators. Students shall be enabled to use these tools to describe and possibly optimize the electromagnetic properties of devices and systems in electrical engineering applications of science and industry. Ability to work in small project teams and present in oral and scientific report form.
Assessment Measures: oral module examination (30 minutes), unrestrictedly repeatable.

CEM2-a. "Computational Electromagnetics (CEM-Lab Project)"

Form of Study: Seminar and exercises
Weekly Hours: 5
Overall Workload: 240 hours 
Description: Team work on industry style projects including commercial electromagnetic field simulations tools (e.g. CST Suite, SEMCAD, FEKO, COMSOL) and/or custom made implementations of simulation tools. Projects goals and the selection of the CEM simulation tools may vary depending on the devices /systems to be modeled. Team presentation of project results within two oral project presentations (first mid semester, second at end of semester) and a written scientific report (paper) to be handed in at the end of the semester.
