School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences

Curriculum Overview

The Computer Simulation in Science (CSiS) Master’s Programme consists of 4 semesters (two years of studies), comprising a total of 120 ECTS credits. Upon successful completion, students are awarded the academic degree Master of Science (M.Sc.)

The first (winter) semester begins from the two-week Block Course on Mathematics Foundations, where students refresh their knowledge of math, gained during their Bachelor’s studies. Later during the semester students must pass the exam for the block course, whereas it is an important part of the programme. To succeed in the programme, students are expected to have preliminary knowledge at the Bachelor’s level in their chosen specialization, as well as proficiency in at least one programming language.

From the second (summer) semester, students choose one of the 8 specializations based on their academic interests and background. This interdisciplinary programme focuses on the development, implementation, and application of computer-based simulation techniques to tackle current research challenges in the natural sciences and engineering. Whether student’s background is in physics, chemistry, life sciences, mathematics or engineering – CSiS equips them with the tools to explore scientific problems and develop innovative solutions through simulation.

The third semester, as well as the second one, comprises both compulsory subjects and studies within the specialization. The CSiS programme benefits from established collaborations with Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZ Jülich), offering students additional opportunities for research and practical experience.

The fourth semester is fully dedicated to the research activities in frames of Master’s Thesis.

The studies on the Computer Simulation in Science (CSiS) Master’s Programme are conducted according with the Examination Regulations, adopted in 2020, and amended in 2023. So currently, for all the students, who began their studies on winter semester 2023/2024 and later, the newer course table applies:

Students, who began their studies before the winter semester 2023/2024, should refer to the older version of the course table:
